<image:title>Center for Plants & Culture</image:title>
<image:caption>Center for Plants & Culture Founded in October 2020 As someone born from a lineage subjected to working lands, I’ve been wanting to bring underrepresented voices into the botanical sphere for some time. So, with great enthusiasm I launched the Center for Plants & Culture. The Center for Plants & Culture is an online platform educating visitors on the many ways our politics, economics, and culture are shaped by nature. With a focus on Black, Brown, and Indigenous voices, Plants & Culture provides an inclusive learning experience that encourages critical thinking and self-reflection.</image:caption>

The dinghy boat serves as the base for the piece, referencing the ships that carried these plants across the world. By utilizing natural history and botanical modes of display, the project references European colonization and collecting, while emphasizing what can’t be contained: the sound of my auntie’s voice (discussing her beliefs around Jatropha) and the plants themselves. Jatropha curcas (or what my auntie calls the physic nut tree) has traveled to the Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys (Oct. 5th, 2022) and to Latinx with Plants in Boyle Heights (Oct. 22nd, 2022).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Retracing Narratives 2019 Bagasse (sugarcane) paper, graphite, wire. Dimensions vary Comprised of over 100 tracings of articles, logos, diagrams, and personal accounts, this work follows sugar from the hands of the cane cutter to the hands of corporate entities around the world. Through the act of tracing, this work is a slow study—or meditation—on this resource that links my Guyanese family to the country of my citizenship. My mother grew up on a sugarcane plantation in Guyana. She was raised primarily by my great grandmother—the cane cutter. My mother’s written reflection is at the core of this work. From the descriptions of the razor-like leaves of the cane, to the taste of raw cane juice, these personal accounts counter the cool objectivity of the processing, marketing, and distributing of sugar in the UK (Tate and Lyle) and in the US (American Sugar Refinery). This work extends from the body of the worker, to the consumer, to product sales—all of which are so implicitly tied.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pursuit of Gold 2016 Wood, personal photographs (open-pit Amazonian goldmine, gold bars, Tate Britain, Tate & Lyle factories; store-bought refined sugar), El Dorado rum, Certification of Completion from the El Dorado rum distillery in Guyana, Tate & Lyle Demerara sugar from Guyana, Lyle's golden syrup, audio recordings of my mother talking about life on a sugar plantation, Tate & Lyle promo videos on corn syrup and ethanol production, Tate & Lyle dextrose, and books ("The Discovery of the Large, Rich, Beautiful Empire of Guiana" and "Maize for the Gods: Unearthing the 9,000-Year History of Corn" 7’ x 10’ 9” x 8 Pursuit of Gold connects my ancestors and me to the transnational and agricultural corporation, Tate and Lyle, as a means to convey a genealogical tree in the globalist era. The work follows the many paths taken by the sugar my Guyanese family harvested, touching upon the present and colonial search for riches (or “El Dorado”). Using a wooden structure representative of my father’s vocation as a carpenter, the two-by-fours become lines that illustrate the conceptual connections between photographs (printed on sugarcane paper) and store-bought goods, such as refined sugar and distilled rum. At the heart of the structure is an audio recording of my mother talking about her life on a Guyanese sugar plantation. By highlighting the interconnectivity of each element, I’m able to show the pervasiveness of colonial and capitalistic reach—where no facet is left untouched.</image:caption>

Mathias Botanical Garden. Whitewashed Botany is an intro into botany’s buried past. Referencing institutional display and storage, metal cases serve as a repository, housing quotes, prints, and objects stripped of their original context. Unlike most botanical displays, plants that have long been collected, cataloged, and capitalized on are shown beside images of peoples whose labor and contributions are rarely acknowledged within scientific circles. Elements are linked using specimen tape, signifying ownership and the inextricable connection between natural history, big business, and colonialism.</image:caption>

<image:title>For protection, with love - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>For protection, with love 2023 Dirt (from the artist's childhood home), jute erosion control cloth, glue, clothesline, clothes and sheets (from the artist's family members), clothes pins, greenhouse, charcoal, camphor resin, camphor tree branches, pie tins, votive glass jars, and audio recording, wooden stool Dimensions vary (Greenhouse: 7’x8’x9’) For protection, with love explores a plant ritual preserved by Caribbean aunties for generations —passed down from woman to woman—and bestowed upon loved ones as a means of protection. This large-scale installation recalls how my Guyanese auntie would burn camphor resin (from the tree Cinnamomum camphora) over charcoal briquettes to protect “all us kids” from “the evil eye.” As visitors walk inside a blackened hexagonal greenhouse, they're surrounded by charcoal covered walls lined with camphor branches. The medicinal and earthy scent of camphor fills the air as viewers hear a recording of my voice sharing stories of how my family has used this tree to defend, heal, and bless. Originating in India and East Asia, the ritual of burning camphor came to the Caribbean with enslaved and indentured laborers—further shaped by Indigenous, Vodou, and Obeah traditions. Whether or not one believes in “evil” or a plant’s ability to ward it off, this continued practice as an incredible act of love, resiliency, and defiance that’s survived the colonial whitewashing of plants and culture.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Carriers - Carriers</image:title>
<image:caption>2024 Carriers is a sculpture and video installation that honors both historical and contemporary women who sustain the world through agriculture. Drawing on my family’s history with cash crops and plantation labor, the work offers a deeply personal perspective on food production. At the heart of Carriers is a large net made from rice, wheat, corn, sugarcane, soy, palm, banana, pineapple, coconut, sorghum, hemp, and flax fibers. I enlisted the expertise of artist Portia Roy, who used a traditional spinning wheel to transform the fibers into nearly 1,000 feet of cordage. I then wove the ropes into a 15' x 30' cargo net, designed to be suspended from the ceiling of the LAVC Gallery. The labor-intensive process of interweaving these plant fibers speaks to both the interconnectedness of global crops and the often overlooked, quiet labor inherent in "women’s work." An accompanying video documents the meticulous preparation of these plant fibers—peeling sugarcane, washing palm fibers, and shredding wheat stalks—alongside the spinning and weaving process. Personal quotes from women around the world help tie these activities to broader themes, reflecting on women as carriers of plant knowledge, seeds, crops, and families. Incorporating elements of knitting and weaving, Carriers pushes the boundaries of traditional craft to create a conceptual object that merges personal stories with research. The net and video not only highlight women as providers and makers but also expose the harsh realities within our food system. Despite comprising nearly 85% of the rural workforce, women in agriculture face underpayment, overwork, and disproportionate impacts from the climate crisis. This installation serves as a tribute to these women, as well as a stark reminder of the persistent discrimination, lack of land rights, and exploitation they endure while feeding the world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Goldmine (Mahdia, Guyana) 2015 24”x36” Photograph In this unstaged photograph, the seemingly bucolic scene is shattered by the sight of the CAT excavator, and the realization that this mountainous landscape is from within an open-pit goldmine. Referencing European 19th century pastoral paintings—and a time when treasure-hunting was celebrated as a God-given right—this captured moment presents the historical fantasy along with the persistent destruction of land and people.</image:caption>
