In an attempt to reference the pitfalls of colonial efforts to usurp land and resources, I set out on a mission to own a boulder.
The looping video footage is from one of our many unsuccessful attempts to take the boulder back out of the truck.
I purchased the 3,000 lb. rock from a recycling plant in Wisconsin and rented a truck to transport it back to Chicago. However, the truck’s axle couldn’t withstand the weight of the massive piece of earth. The unruly boulder crushed the wooden palette it sat upon and broke through its holding straps, putting the boulder in motion and my life in danger. Underestimating the power of the formidable stone, my failed mission spoke more pointedly to the absurdity of attempting to control natural resources.
